Ih camp session 4..last days together

As the days were coming to an end there grew a close bond between the campers, teachers and monitors. The rainy days began to stop and out appeared the sun to brighten our last few days.
We made it to the mini Zoo in Santander and to the Magdalena beach right after to splish-splash in the the water and enjoy the warm rays of sunlight. Our last night activities were the Disco, Talent show, and an American style camp fire.

Waving Flag (Los Nuberos Remix)

Wavin’ Flag (Los Nuberos Remix)
Written by your English teachers: Leah, Lindsay, Edel, and Phaedra
Performed with love at the final campfire (August 9th, 2011)

Give me ping pong
Give me football
Can I please have…
Two euros?

Write your journal
Draw your picture
When you’re finished…
In your folder (not carpet)

Eating Pili’s food
Singing songs in the dining room
Chasing Manu with a hockey stick
And making friends at the end of the day
We all say

When I get home
I will remember
All of the good times
In Los Nuberos

Nuberos, Nuberos, Nuberos!

Give me fashion
Dance a disco
Give me a reason
To dress up

See the talents
Do gymkanas
Raging Red Bulls
Win everything

Shouting ‘please speak in English!’
‘We’re English teachers in an English camp!’
We’ve had a fantastic time
Making memories for a lifetime
We all say

When I get home
I will remember
All of the good times
In Los Nuberos

Nuberos, Nuberos, Nuberos….

Cayón session 4: not nearly done yet!

What a great few days we’ve had here at Los Nuberos! We have now posted the photos of horse riding in Laredo…what a fun excursion! Everyone, big and small, young and old, was able to take part and make a new horse friend.

On day 6 (August 5th), it was raining so we did tons of fun activities indoors. In the morning, we did a team competition called ‘rocket wars’ in which each team had to cleverly design and defend their territory. In the afternoon, our English teachers hosted an ‘American and Irish Day’ consisting of crafts such as painting flags, making paper chains, weaving dream-catchers, and learning some traditional Irish symbols and legends. All of these artsy creations are now decorating the albergue! To top it all off, dinner was hamburgers and french fries served buffet-style. That evening we did trivia with the monitors as our night activity.

The morning of day 7 the weather was looking promising, so after an hour and a half of English in the morning with our teachers we packed up our bags, put on our bathing suits and sunscreen, and piled on the bus to Magdalena Park in Santander. We were able to enjoy a couple of hours of sun on the beach, swimming the water, sunbathing, and even catching lizards. Then the clouds came and we quickly moved along the park, seeing penguins, seals, and sea lions! With some extra time to spend before having to go back to camp, we started to head downtown for some quick shopping but were stopped halfway there by torrential rains and had no choice but to return to camp. Of course, we made sure to stop in Sarón for some sweets on the way home! For night activity, we did a fun ‘days of the week’ gymkana with the monitors.

Day 8 gave us nice enough weather that directly after breakfast we hiked to the village of Esles to do a town treasure hunt that required asking the help of knowledgable locals. Back at camp in the afternoon, we put on our chef hats to prepare some classic American-style treats: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, trail mix, fruit kebabs, lemonade, and chocolate chip cookies! After stuffing ourselfs with our homemade snacks, we had English class with our teachers that included games such as kickball, flag football, playing with a parachute, and trying out the camp’s new tree swing! The night activity was the much-anticipated Disco, where everyone boogied down to their favorite tunes and Mario and Elena were crowned king and queen of the dance!

Only a couple of days left…and there’s still so much more fun to come!

Cayón session 4…creatures, crafts, and quests!

Though we’ve had to suffer through a couple crazy thunderstorms, the weather has been for the most part cooperative and we’ve been able to enjoy both the extensive outdoor space the camp offers (ping-pong table, basketball court, soccer pitch, volleyball net, and tons of grass and concrete) as well as the villages, rivers, and beautiful trails in the surrounding landscape here in Cayón.

On our first day, we wasted no time after getting settled in the bedrooms and chatting a bit with our new campmates before we were off on a scenic hike to the nearby village of Totero, where we played some games and most importantly learned about some strange, scary, and silly mythological creatures native to Cantabria. That evening we got to know our new friends through the creation of the four teams at this week’s camp: The Fierce Tigers, The Fiery Phoenixes, The Furious Dragons, and The Raging Red Bulls. In these teams we compete in competitions that take place during morning activities with our English teachers, afternoon activities with the monitors, and night activities.

Every morning after breakfast we have input groups (different from our teams) during which we practice English with our teachers. We write in our journals and play some fun games such as categories, fizz buzz, and bomb. For the rest of the morning we play more games with the teachers practicing English, often outside if the weather permits. A memorable one has been ‘human sculptures,’ where we competed in teams to make the most creative sculptures out of our bodies based on certain rules.

In the afternoons and evenings we’ve done some great things so far! On day 2 we took advantage of the sunny weather to hike to a nearby gentle spot on the river to do a bit of swimming, play with our new friends, and see the area surrounding camp! That night, remembering what we learned about Cantabrian creatures the day before in Totero, we had a race with our teams around the camp to find these creatures and pass some of their tests in order to fill our forest passports.

On day 3, as it was unfortunately rainy and wet, we stayed indoors for the afternoon playing with clay, making cool bracelets, and doing other fun arts and crafts. That evening we did an English karaoke night with our teachers, attended by special guests the Village People (..”Y.M.C.A.!”) and KISS!

On day 4 the sun poked it’s head out again and we walked to another nearby village, Lloreda, where we spent a couple of hours learning several traditional Cantabrian sports and games, such as bowling, wrestling, and vaulting with long sticks! We also learned about the signals, such as arrows, circles, and numbers that Cantabrian people have used for hundreds of years to communicate to each other on paths….these came in very handy during our night activity when we had an “American quest” which required the reading of these signs with our flashlights on a pitch-dark hike near the camp!

Today, day 5, we were blessed with beautiful weather and after a morning of English we packed up our backpacks with a towel and our lunch, pulled on our bathing suits, covered ourselves in sunblock and went by bus to Laredo! There we spent the afternoon horseback-riding, swimming in the ocean, and sunbathing or playing games on the beach.

Check back in the next couple of days for photos of Laredo and tonight’s night activity, a fashion show, as well as for updates and pictures of the fun to come!

ih camp session : The rain hasn’t stopped us yet!

There was a promising start to the camp weather wise, when Saturday we could don our bathing suits and enjoy Water Day!! Our day commenced with our teams competing in Water Balloon Toss and Ping Pong Relay. But this was just a taster, as next came one of our camp favourites, the wet and soapy “Slip n Slide”! Great fun was had by campers, teachers and monitors alike! After lunch we headed for the river. Some great team work got us across a strong current, but once we reached our destination everyone enjoyed a relaxing afternoon swimming and sunbathing under the evening sun. Later on, our singing skills were well and truly tested at our Karaoke night. There was much excitement for our special guest performances; Rihanna, the Spice Girls and Kiss!!

On Sunday the rain clouds descended over Los Nuberos, much to our dismay. Our spirits weren’t dampened however, we had a great day preparing some delicious American food; Chocolate chip cookies, lemonade, rice krispie treats and trail mix!! Los Nuberos transformed into a cinema for the evening so we sat back in front of the big screen and watched “The Little Rascals” movie (while enjoying our yummy food of course!!) The American theme continued into dinner time with a traditional American hamburger and fries, served buffet style!! MMMmmmmm!! For our night activity we had fun with Sole learning “Hey Soul Sister”

Monday afternoon we headed for Lloreda, despite the threat of rain. Once there we played some typical Cantabrian sports such as bowling (bolos), cantabrian wrestling and stick jumping. After a day indoors it was refreshing to be outside again! Later that night we designed our own island and had to defend our territories in a tactical game of Rocket Wars!

Tuesday, Mr. Rain came back strong so it was time to get crafty. Summer camp is a great opportunity to make new friends and no better way to show it than to make some colourful friendship bracelets… They will be a lasting memory of a fantastic experience. After lunch we had an American style carnival, with pottery/clay modelling, henna tattoos, face painting, hair braiding, ping pong toss and bowling. Night activity was the fashion show, where our teams had to design a fashion line based on a theme of their choice. Some fantastic strutting and posing was seen on the catwalk!!

Wednesday, the weather cleared up enough for us to take a trip to Laredo, where we enjoyed a relaxing day on the beach. We also had the opportunity to go horse riding, one of the highlights of the camp! A great day was had by all! Later that night it was time to grab our flashlights and work as a team to follow the road markings which led us to various clues (pistas). Once we found the clues we had to use the information to complete the “American Quest”. This was an exciting and educational game in which we all found out some interesting things about U.S.A history.

ih Camp july 21-31

Despite the weather, our first couple days at camp have been full of activities and fun! Making new friends and working together while speaking English is key this week! Our first day, the children met the teachers and monitors. The trip to Totero was postponed (due to weather) so we had our camp introduction in the dining room, where the mythological creatures of Cantabria came to life for the first time (thanks to the teachers and monitors!) After a yummy dinner, we had our first night activity (velada)!! For most of our camp activities we will compete with our team, so our first task was to meet the team members and create a name, poster and chant! Everyday there are contests and competitions, such as “Olympics day,” a water balloon toss, and trivia. As the days fly by the children write their in journals filled with experiences and rich, new vocabulary to share with their friends and family.
Here are a some pictures from the first few days.

Cayón session 2: see you next summer!

What a fantastic 11 days we had! From all the monitors and teachers, good luck to all and we will miss you. Until next summer…

Cayón session 2: the end is near…

Tomorrow we must say goodbye, but nobody can say it hasn’t been a fantastic journey! See all the photos below of the last couple of days…so many great activities.

One morning we played all water activities and games such as a water relay, balloon toss, and the slip n slide. After we went to Santander to see the Magdalena Park and swim for a bit on the beach. For night activity (no photos as it was completely dark) we had a team competition where we had to find around the camp some of the mythological Cantabrian creatures that we learned about on the first day.

We also had a Carnival Day with all of the teachers, doing tons of fun activities inside such as face painting, making jewelery, henna tattoos, scratch drawings, clay painting, ping pong toss, and bowling. In the evening we all showed off our unique talents in the camp talent show!

Cayón: Sesson 2 in full swing!

We had a slow couple of first days here at Los Nuberos due to horrible rain and cold weather (typical Cantabria!), but now we are in full swing! When the sun finally peaked its head out from behind the dreary clouds, we were able to go on our planned excursions and do some outdoor activities.

For the first couple of days, we did fun indoor activities such as arts and crafts, learning songs, and most importantly, getting to know our new friends. One of the first night activities (velada) was karaoke night, at which we sang along to our favorite songs (in English!!) and danced the night away. We were all surprised by the guest appearances of The Spice Girls, Freddy Mercury, and KISS!

Since then, we have been out and about every day! One excursion was to the nearby village of Lloreda, where we learned about traditional Cantabrian games and sport – see the pictures below of bowling and fighting! Another excursion was to Santa María de Cayón, where we toured the ancient church and took advantage of the space to play one of the most fun and classic camp games – capture the flag! After playing for a while, we swam in the nearby river under the warm sun. And this morning, we walked to the cute village Esles to play a treasure hunt in which we had to ask locals for help.

Apart from walking trips to nearby towns, we took a day-trip to the beach town Laredo where we got to swim in the ocean and ride horses! (See photos) After the rain everyone was so happy to be able to finally take in some summer sun.

At the camp we’re continuing to do some fun activities – today, for example, we had a food day where we made some delicious American-style snacks: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, lemonade, trail mix, fruit skewers, and for dessert after dinner, chocolate chip cookies! Last night we had a hilarious fashion show, for which each of the five teams had a different theme. All of the monitors and teachers were impressed with the effort that all of the campers put into their costumes!

Keep checking back, for there are more updates to come!

Cayón: the long goodbye

The end finally came, we had to say our goodbyes. It was a tearful ending for many, including for me (Leah). All us teachers and monitors had such an amazing time – our few days together felt like a lifetime. We wish everyone the best of luck and will see everyone again next year.

I am going to post a ton of photos…many of these were requested by the kids in them, many were taken when my camera would disappear for a few minutes, to be found again with several silly pictures of faces, feet, etc.

We will miss everyone – thanks to all, the kids especially, for making camp a truly unforgettable experience.
